Auto Not Correct
One day I was working at B'nai Shalom with a first grader, Genya. I was reading with him.
When I work with students I like to help them through a process to think through things on their own and not just give things to them. I like to try to meet them where they are. I like to break it down periodically to make sure that they understand what we're reading. And sometimes we take turns. I read some and they read some.
So, I was reading a book to Genya. This particular book was about boats and related ideas. So periodically I would read something and I would say, "do you know what that means?" To make sure that he understood what it means and also in the context of what it means. So I read the word cargoes. I said, "Genya, do you know what car goes means?" He said, "car goes vrrm vrrm." I immediately understood what he meant. That he heard the word car goes as like an automobile travels which is true. But in this case Cargoes was one word that means shipment. So, my response was, "well yeah sometimes Cargoes means that it's like a car. But in this case Cargoes means something different. It means a shipment. I don't remember exactly how I put it but that's the gist of what I said.
It's just another reminder about the importance of understanding context, depth, and/or nuances of information that we receive.
