Hello Friend
I've been lucky to know alot of good people. One of them was Z Holler. I met him within a context of community members coming together to support each other. I think that I saw him more often when people were working with the Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission (GTRC).
He greeted people in a firm, deep, welcoming way by simply saying "Hello Friend" with a smile. For those of us who knew him, we can hear his voice with those words and see his smile. I know I can.
I believe that he was one of the co founders of the Beloved Community Center, with Reverend Nelson Johnson, and Reverend Barbara Dua. Z was also a minister who seemed to be in the world relating to people seeing us individually and collectively working with social justice issues.
I feel like I didn't get to know Z for a long amount of time. But the time that I knew him has had and continues to have a profound impact on me.
And his last name, Holler, always felt ironic to me, because he was soft spoken on the physical surface. But now I'm thinking that maybe the Holler relates to his strong expression of his passion for justice in our lives. So, maybe the Holler relates to his spirit.
So, Z transitioned physically, but his spirit is still with me. So, for meeting and greeting you, I say, "Hello Friend ". And maybe there are moments when I feel your spirit. So I say, " Hello Friend".
And I don't know what's in the future. So, I'll say, "Maybe I'll see you later friend".
