Ma, what does autopsy mean?

At one point, as my mother and I were moving through mourningside homes, we were standing in front of a man.  I didn't recognize it at the time, but I think he was a paramedic.

I remember my mother was arguing with him.  He said that Jim needs an autopsy.  My mother said, he doesn't need an autopsy.  We know what happened.  And I think the paramedic said that Jim needs an autopsy to find out what happened.

I vaguely remember that exchange and my memory is that it was brief.

But the word autopsy stuck out to me, because that was the first time that I heard that word.  I think I asked my mother, ma, what does autopsy mean.  I don't remember my mother's response.

No one should have to go through these experiences.  Just from 1 person killed, resulted in a wife becoming a widow, a stepson living new experiences with words like autopsy among many other experiences, perspectives, etc.

Ma, I'm sorry that you had to go through that, an event which impacted your life and continues to do so in so many ways.

Paramedics, thank you for any and all of the ways you extended care with us and others, on November 3rd and other times too.
